A Winter Landscape

    Winter Lanscape - Sesshu Toyo

Landscape Inspiration
Sesshu Toyo shares his creativity by using natural materials to mold this piece he calls Winter Landscape. The ink was formulated from mother nature herself mixed with burned pine twigs and resin. This is also known as Chinese Ink a common practice used throughout China. How does this project such inspiration? Each shade is created with just enough water to perfect its silhouettes and outlines. With just paper and manmade ink, Toyo is able to illustrate a man walking through a winter storm while balancing autumn on the other half.

Winter Emotions
Toyo uses a singular man walking towards shelter through the winter snow to emphasize the harsh winter. On the other half, he uses a parked boat to cast a subtle autumn season. To explain the demonstration, Toyo uses the white space to contrast snow in the image. While using lines to show darker contrast to express the warmth in the autumn season.

My ThoughtsDakota Shares
As I get to learn more about historical art and what it represents, I look more into the drawings and pictures that I come across. For example, I work with children and I often do not think about how they came to draw it but where the inspiration came from. Now, I do not only see it for the picture but the meaning it expresses without words. Historically drawn art and pictures help motivate me to learn more about expressing myself with a pencil and paper. I have been thinking to collect art pieces that influence great meaning from where I come and how I can relate to it. Such as this picture, I come from a rural Alaskan town, so I can see my ancestors walking through snow after spending their day in the wilderness.

Behind the Winter LandscapeAutumn and Winter Landscapes
Research shows that the national treasure Winter Landscape is just one out of two pieces that came out in the late 15th to the early 16th century, says the Agency for Cultural Affairs (see citation below). Toyo was said to have traveled through the country to study the nature and other styles of paintings that were practiced in China. Toyo's work and studies has pushed him to continue to develop his method and influence the Chinese Ink arts.

  1. An amazing painting! It's amazing how with just ink and a brush, so much texture and emotion can be shown. The jagged lines of the mountains and trees and harsh horizontal brush stroked in the sky emphasize the harsh winter as you said. I love to hear how inspired you are by this piece.

  2. Sesshu Toyo’s Winter Landscape is a really cool painting that shows the contrast between autumn and winter in a unique way. The interpretation of the lone figure and the boat adds an interesting perspective. It’s amazing how simple ink can create such a detailed scene!
